Chapter 78

I shimmy the Charger back down the forest track to the highway, and head past the gas station to the intersection, where the road curls up to Sixteen’s house.

I pull up at the electric gates. The dogs hurtle down from the house, snarling and throwing themselves up against the fence, which is helpful since it tells me it isn’t electrified. The nylon pack with the tranq pistol has Beggin’ Strips in it but I don’t need it for these two. They have my spoor from their earlier adventure and they know I’m the enemy – or prey, depending on your point of view.

I put a dart into each of them. It takes two for the second, who’s bigger. It would be easier to kill them, and I’m not sentimental about animals who have tried to kill me, human or canine, but if there’s one thing I’ve learned from watching Hollywood action movies, it’s this: never kill another man’s dog.

When I’m sure the dogs are insensible, I cut through the fence and duck through the wire, then drag their snoring asses up to the house, where there are chains attached to the porch supports.

All the exterior doors are hardened with steel surrounds and concealed hinges. The locks are high quality and would take far too long to pick, so I simply blow them with a shaped lump of C4. The noise of the explosion echoes down into the town below but this can no longer be considered a covert operation.
